Exercises

1: Form a group of four or five. Your group is in charge of setting up a new company. You must create a basic organizational chart, logo, and company slogan. Using the flip chart, draw a picture of how the organization will look. Use the papers and markers to create a slogan and a logo. When you are done, be prepared to discuss what happened as your team decided on the structure of the organization, the slogan, and the logo.

What happened during the process?

Were there any differences of opinion?

What decision-making method did the team use to reach a decision regarding the slogan, the logo, the use of colors, and the structure of the organization (authoritative decision, ranking, voting, or consensus)?

2: Form a group of four or five. You instructor will give each group member a handout to read called Student’s brief. This brief explains the details of a situation that your group must understand. The instructor will also give the group a handout called Ranking sheet.

As a group, your job is to decide in which order the volunteers should be saved. You also need to list the criteria the group used to decide the order for saving each volunteer in the handout titled Ranking sheet.

When you have ranked all the volunteers, have each team member complete the last page of the Student’s brief document. Be prepared to discuss your experiences with the class.
