Chapter 14. Listening skills > Active listening

Active listening

Active listening allows individuals to understand the significance of a message, question its validity, and respond to the speaker. As you receive a message during a team meeting, you will need to interpret the message to determine its meaning and any hidden agendas. Once the message has been fully received, you should provide feedback to the sender. To improve your active listening skills you can use several methods.

Control the environment

If possible, create a setting that encourages unencumbered communication. This includes eliminating background noise and making it clear to the team that interruptions are not acceptable. Eliminate physical barriers such as desks and tables whenever possible.
