Exercises

1: In the following scene, Matt (employee) is getting water at the cooler. Brian (employee) approaches Matt to get something to drink as well.

Brian:(Upbeat) Hey, Matt, how’s it going?

Matt:(Sullen) Oh, all right, I guess.

Brian:(Concerned) That doesn’t sound very convincing. Anything I can do to help?

Matt:(Hesitating) Well, I’m just not looking forward to this new team I got assigned to. I really prefer to work alone. I feel like I’m more productive when I can work by myself.

Brian:(Reassuring) Hey, I felt the same way last quarter when I was assigned to that brainstorming committee, but I ended up really enjoying it. I got to know some great people and learned a lot about how some of the other departments do things around here.

Matt: (Looking happier) Really? That’s reassuring to hear. Might be I should just try to be more open-minded. Hopefully things will work out for me as well as they did for you.

Do you think that Matt is justified in feeling unhappy because he is assigned to a new team? If you had been in a similar situation, would you also have felt the same way?

Discuss the importance of a team member in a team.

2: Play the human scrabble. The idea is to form words by using the letter cards provided to you by the facilitator. Each word should have at least four letters. Try to use every letter.

Discuss how teamwork played a role in and evolved during the game.
