Chapter 16. Unit summary: Nonverbal communication and active listening

Topic A In this unit, you learned that nonverbal communication accounts for a large amount of communication in a team. You learned that nonverbal communication can be expressed through facial expressions, eye contact, gestures and postures, paralanguage, and the interpretation of proxemics, all of which can depend on cultural background. You also learned about the ways in which verbal communication meshes with nonverbal cues. Then you learned how to convey positive nonverbal cues when you communicate.
Topic B Next, you learned how active listening benefits a team by increasing synergy, team productivity, and personal satisfaction. You also learned about the listening pitfalls and how to overcome them, and steps you can take to become an active listener.
Topic C Finally, you learned about using effective questioning to focus on goals or to evaluate the team’s performance status when responding to team members. You also learned guidelines for responding to feedback or input from team members.
