4: Read this story and then answer the questions that follow:

There is a type of caterpillar that is called a processionary caterpillar. It is named so because one processionary caterpillar establishes a direction and the other caterpillars fall in very closely behind and move on the same path. As a matter of fact, the behavior of the followers becomes so automatic that their eyes become half-closed as they shut out the world around them and let the leader do all the thinking and decision-making about the direction to be pursued. This behavior is rote and automatic.

To understand this fully, consider an example. Once, when a leader started circling the edge of the flowerpot, the other caterpillars followed suit in a tight procession, forming a closed circle in which any distinction between the leader and followers became blurred. The path had neither a beginning nor an end. Instead of getting bored with this nonproductive activity, the caterpillars kept up their mindless search for several days and nights until they dropped off the edge because of exhaustion and starvation. Relying totally on instinct, past experiences, custom, and tradition, the caterpillars achieved nothing because they mistook the activity for achievement.
