Exercises

1: In the following scene, Mary (employee) and Kara (employee) are talking as they walk out of a meeting.

Kara: (Complaining) I find it almost impossible to stay awake during these department meetings. Ms. Castor is just such a dry speaker.

Mary: (Straightforward) I used to think that too until I realized how much I was missing from each meeting.

Kara: (Confused) What do you mean?

Mary: (Explaining) Well, I realized that Ms. Castor was doing her job by relaying the information to us, but by not listening, I wasn’t doing mine. Once I realized how much information I was missing, I started to pay more attention.

Kara: (Impressed and thoughtfully) I never thought of it that way, but you’re right. I think I’ll approach these meetings with a different attitude now.

How can Kara overcome the feeling of sleepiness during departmental meetings?

Can you cite similar examples from your personal experiences that reflect you being an inactive listener? How can you improve and become an active listener?

2: Watch the movie clip and then answer the question.

Discuss how Brad’s attitude will help him become an active listener.
