The Self-Directed Team 324 The Least You Need to Know · Self-directed teams have no formal or permanent leaders. Members may work collaboratively on projects or select an associate to lead a specific project. · In converting to a self-directed team, modify the current job descriptions to give members more control over making decisions. · In most teams, every member will act as project leader at one time or another. · Projects are discussed at regular team meetings. Often, team members who are not working on that par- ticular project can contribute ideas that help move it forward. · A self-motivated team must be made up of self-motivated members who are dedicated to achievement. · When members are active participants in establishing the mission and determining the goals, they will be enthusiastic about them. · An advantage of working in a team is that each team member helps motivate the others. · Companies that have been successful in using self-directed teams recognize that it takes time to make them work. · To obtain comprehensive appraisals of a team member's effectiveness, some form of peer evaluation should be used in addition to self-evaluation.
