Chapter 10. Overcoming Team Discord > Stress and Burnout - Pg. 115

Overcoming Team Discord 115 The Peacock In every organization there are people who just can't help but celebrate even the smallest of suc- cesses by bragging and strutting. They want everybody to know that they're the greatest. This is not so bad if he or she does this occasionally. But when this peacock "displays his feathers" over and over again, other team members will become annoyed. Following are some tips on dealing with peacocks: · Give them special attention. The reason for strutting is to gain attention. If the team leader recognizes this and praises each and every accomplishment, there will be less reason to strut in front of other members. · Take the time to listen to them.Peacocks have big egos and need to talk to others--particularly higher ranking people like team leaders. · Don't challenge them in front of others.Often in their bragging, they exaggerate their achieve- ments. Consciously or subconsciously, they need to appear greater than they really are. That doesn't mean you should let them get away with unfounded opinions. When confronting them, have solid facts to back you up--and do it in private. · Use their talents. When assigning work, let them know you believe they have what it takes to perform superbly. They "know" they're good, but they'll appreciate hearing it from you and will work hard to prove that you have displayed good judgment in giving them the assignment. The Obnoxious Associate Have you ever had a coworker who not only disagrees with everything you say, but expresses dissent in a nasty, sarcastic, even cruel manner. "That's the stupidest idea I ever heard." After several such encounters, you may want to kick him off the team. But that's not always possible.
