Different Strokes for Different Folks 206 Rewards for Winners At the Ace Insurance Company, some of the rewards for the winning team included treating the entire team to some special event like a weekend getaway at a resort, a team picnic or beach party on company time, or giving the team time off from work. Most important is giving the team recognition. Photos of the team in the company magazine, a plaque in the work area, and personal letters to team members from the CEO all add to the value of competition. Don't forget the runners-up. Nobody should be a loser. Every team should be thanked for partici- pating and given some token to acknowledge its efforts. The Downside Team competition can cause problems. Sometimes teams become too zealous to win, to the det- riment of the company. At Ace Insurance one team was so determined to win the first quarter's contest that they withheld information needed by another team, causing the loss of a good customer. It's up to team leaders and contest managers to work out ways of preventing this. The Least You Need to Know · As team leader, your chief job is to make your team members a cohesive group and work with them to develop that inner motivation needed to accomplishing the team's goals. · By observing and listening, you can learn a great deal about your team members. Listen to what members say, and listen to what they don't say. · In motivating the team, follow the TEAM acrostic: Train members in team interaction; develop Enthusi- asm for meeting goals; Assure members of your support; set goals and let them know how their perform- ance in reaching the goals will be Measured. · One way to build up members' confidence and motivate them is to give them positive reinforcement. Too often, the only feedback employees get is criticism. · To maintain team harmony and still give individuals rewards for achievements, instead of having members compete with each other, have them compete against their own previous accomplishments. · People need praise. If members do nothing that merits praise, assign them projects in which they can demonstrate success. · Recognizing team members' accomplishments is important, but so is recognizing successful efforts of the entire team. · The most motivated team is one that motivates itself. · To engender enthusiasm, the secret ingredient of success, develop in all team members a fervent com- mitment to the team's goals. · Competition among teams can stimulate and excite members to achieve the goals of the contest.
