Outstanding leaders have both a "tough hide" and an ability to laugh at themselves. Great leaders have a sense of humor and do not always take themselves seriously. A good example of this is Victor Kiam, now owner and CEO of the Remington Shaver Company. He tells this story about when he was a salesman selling Playtex girdles. He came up with what he thought was a great marketing gimmick. Knowing that girdles frequently were hard to clean, he offered a special promotion: Women who brought in their old, worn out girdles could buy a new Playtex model at a discount. The plan worked a little too well. So many dirty girdles were turned in at a New York department store that he was nearly arrested for violating health codes. Truly outstanding leaders are not deterred by disappointment, failure, or rejection. One very successful leader who didn't let failure get him down is Tom Monaghan, who created and grew Domino's Pizza from a one store pizza parlor to a chain of several thousand home
