Chapter 12. Motivation—A Strong Sense of Direction Cuts the Stress

You rarely read in the popular press about the importance of purpose and direction in reducing stress. Yet a sense of purpose and direction in our lives—a sense of motivation—is the key to managing and conquering stress.

The word motivation comes from the Latin movere, which means to move. Motivation suggests energy, drive, persistence, accomplishments, teamwork, satisfaction. These are things we all want, things every organization wants. Yet we often overlook the core meaning of motivation.
