Chapter 22. Keep Your Stimulation and Excitement Quota Full

Many people procrastinate because they thrive on the challenge of getting things done under last-minute pressure. Such individuals have a high stimulation and excitement quota. They regularly end up getting things done at the last minute. If it is 8 A.M. and they have a report due at 4 P.M. and the report preparation takes an hour, you can predict that these people will start on the report at 3 P.M.—or maybe 3:15. It is more exciting that way. If such individuals inadvertently get caught up on their work before a trip or an event, they will feel compelled to add a new project.

The solution is to keep your stimulation and excitement quota filled productively. This reduces the need to fill your quota by procrastination. If you know you like a lot of excitement, plan for it. Have lunch with a new person, take on a new assignment, join an extra professional association, learn a new software application. You know what appeals to your personality. Keep your S&EQ at the level you want. Reinforce yourself with these self-talk statements:
