Part V: Procrastination and Motivation: ... > Do the Toughest Top Priority First

Chapter 21. Do the Toughest Top Priority First

Tackle that important but unpleasant task first and get it out of the way. Have you ever had a day when, as you drive to work, you are thinking about the job that has to be done, but that job is the last thing you want to do? Have you noticed that the longer you put it off, the more it haunts you and will not let you forget it? It hovers over you like a gray cloud. If you move away from your desk, it follows you. When the phone rings, you hope it is not someone wondering if that tough top-priority job is done.

Now picture this: As you drive to work, you think about that tough top-priority task and you flex your mental muscles. Arriving at your desk, you meet that task head-on. It may be a report you have been putting off, a bad-news phone call you need to make, that correspondence you need to answer. Whatever it is, as soon as you get it done, the whole world lights up. That gray cloud floats away. You feel your life is under control. You feel energized.
