Why Do Pictures of Excellence Work So Powerfully?

You read in the examples on the previous page how different people pictured what they wanted to achieve, which then added to their motivation in making that picture come true. But you may be wondering about the power behind these pictures of excellence. They work by:

Providing right-brain involvement. Pictures involve the visual, spatial, creative properties of the right brain, not just the cognitive properties of the left brain. So often statements of purpose and direction appeal only to the left brain. Pictures of excellence add the power appeal of the right-brain hemisphere.

Giving your objectives the appeal of the emotional first brain. Exciting new information shows that pictures directly affect our more primitive brain first, even before they reach the left and right hemispheres. In his book, You’ve Got To Be Believed To Be Heard, author Bert Decker writes about the First Brain, which is our emotional brain (the limbic system). It is that primitive and unconscious part of the brain that is a powerful driving force in our lives. The First Brain is directly affected by all of our sensory input. What you see and hear is literally transmitted through the First Brain even before it reaches the left and right hemispheres of the New Brain, the cerebral cortex. Although the First Brain is affected by all senses, it is very much dominated by the visual input. Which is why visualizing pictures can have an even more powerful impact than ever thought possible.
