Stress and the Motivational Power of a Dream

“A dream did it.” Carol smiled musingly at the group around the table as she shared a story from her family experience. “A dream helped my 79-year-old father-in-law survive tremendous stress,” she said. “I believe it was his dream that pulled him through to his 80th birthday.

“The doctors told us Pops was living on oxygen and borrowed time and that he had only a few more weeks to live. I remembered how he always enjoyed having a dream or big goal to work toward. So that evening I sat down beside his bed in our upstairs bedroom, and I threw him a challenge: ‘Pops, how about hosting a birthday party for yourself a year from now? Invite the five kids and their families. You know, Pops, you can’t take it with you. Why don’t you pay for the party and the travel for everyone too?’
