Losing a Gymnast

“Those conversations show what my mental attitude was like,” Barbara explained to the group. “Everything focused on my being sick. Every morning I’d wake up, hit the snooze alarm seven times, drag myself to the shower, and by the time I yanked my pantyhose on, I was so tired and out of breath I had to sit down and rest.

“I didn’t walk anywhere. Even though my office was only two buildings away from the cafeteria, I drove to lunch every day. Every night after work, I put on my pajamas, took my dinner upstairs to my bed, and spent the evening eating and watching TV. I lived that way for years.
