A Solid Foundation

You will understand Barbara’s story better when you know that she had built a foundation. For six years she had attended weekly meetings in a 12-step program. In working the steps, she had developed the habit of mentally reinforcing helpful beliefs day by day. In addition, for four years, she had invested in family therapy for herself and her two children. Here are Barbara’s own words as she spoke to the group in a follow-up seminar.

“My life reads like The Perils of Pauline!” Barbara said. A 30-something brunette with a penchant for self-deprecation, Barbara was desperate, depressed, and 70 pounds overweight. She made jokes at her own expense, such as “I go to the tent section to buy my dresses. And I always avoid bridges. Their load limit is 10 tons.”
