What You Will Learn in this Chapter

To include a chapter on a spiritual perspective in a book about stress mastery may impress some as painfully obvious, and others as patently unscientific and unnecessary. After all, we, the authors, are scientists and as such are obligated to attempt to cite evidence to substantiate our point of view. Traditionally, spiritual matters have been outside the realm of the scientific and relegated to the corridors of faith and speculation, or, at worst, merely the superstitions of those with an unsophisticated grasp of probability theory, placebo effects, and psychopathology. Yet the vast majority of people on our planet hold to some kind of belief system that affects their day-to-day quality of life. These beliefs, unscientific or not, can be sources of great pain, guilt, feelings of inadequacy, hopelessness, confusion, and fear. But they can also be a source of love, compassion, joy, vitality, and a peace that surpasses understanding. A complete treatise on this subject is well beyond the scope of this text, but to leave it unaddressed is to abandon our charge of presenting you with a wide buffet of ideas regarding the mastery of stress.
