Chapter 4. Cultivating Awareness > What You Will Learn in this Chapter

What You Will Learn in this Chapter

  • To enumerate the value of self-awareness.

  • To learn how adopting the witnessing stance facilitates the process of self-awareness.

  • To explain how the three stress hardiness attitudes of control, commitment and challenge contribute to stress resilience.

  • To assess your own level of stress hardiness using the stress hardiness inventory.

  • To define an internal locus of control.

  • To explain the relationship of an internal locus of control to proactivity.

By now you have become more aware of your breathing and you can notice just how you are breathing. Are you using your diaphragm or your thorax? Are you breathing deeply and slowly, with a comfortable rhythm? Or is your breath fast and chaotic? In any situation, if you notice that you are engaged in unhealthy, stress-producing breathing, this awareness allows you the opportunity to shift the pattern to a more appropriate one.
