Use Reinforcement

You should use reinforcement to provide positive rewards for small steps in the direction of change. Without it, you are likely to fail. The use of concrete, observable reinforcers, such as taking in a movie for reward or taking part in project work that is stimulating for you, may, at first, seem contrived or unnecessarily time-consuming, but research has proven that it is critically important to success.

Reinforcers need not feel contrived, however. For example, keeping a journal can be quite a useful reinforcer. As time goes on, look back in your journal at earlier experiences, reactions, and learnings. It will become obvious to you how much you’ve grown since first setting your goals.
