Background

The Center for Creative Leadership’s understanding of effective leadership development strategies is drawn from research on how successful managers learn from experience, from evaluation of our leadership development programs, and from working with managers as they set learning goals.

Our research on learning experiences began with a study of key events in executives’ careers (see McCall and others, The Lessons of Experience, cited above). This study was replicated with women executives (Van Velsor, E., & Hughes, M. W., Gender differences in the development of managers: How women managers learn from experience, 1990, Greensboro, NC: Center for Creative Leadership) and is currently being replicated with African-American managers.
