Following are some guidelines for getting the right kind of help. Think of your desired result and check it against these criteria.

Help Should:

  • “feel” right-listen to your gut

  • not endanger life or safety

  • be verifiable, if possible

  • be reputable

  • be time-tested, if possible

  • be field-tested, if possible

  • be experienced

  • be well-practiced

  • be cross-checked with other opinions

  • be researched

  • come from several sources

  • be current, if appropriate

  • align with basic moral and value systems

  • maximize strengths and minimize weaknesses

  • be well-organized

  • be thorough

  • involve those who have expertise in your area of focus

  • be innovative, if appropriate

  • use common sense

  • be targeted toward your desired result
