Chapter 8. What are Prizes?

Prizes are the rewards of your journey. They are the results, including feedback, learning experiences, reflections, evaluations, judgments, summaries, appraisals, revelations, settlements, or any other forms of conclusion. In order for prizes to be of value, they need to be examined by the individuals or groups whose lives they affect. In so doing, we learn the truth of the journey.

Truths are the ultimate prizes. They teach us about ourselves, what is of value and purposeful. One truth many discover is that the adventure is its own reward. The adventure may be perilous and the outcome unknown and beyond your control. Embarking on that adventure, however, and the experience it brings, will reward you with increased knowledge and confidence regardless of the tangible results. According to Joseph Campbell, each of us is a completely unique crea-ture: If we are ever to give any gift to the world, it must come from our own experience and the fulfillment of our own potentialities, and not someone else’s.
