The Spiral of Renewal

The nature of change dictates that you can never truly go back to the same place. You can’t actually go Home again because you have evolved, one way or another. There may still be the “look” of the old—there will still be telephone calls to make and papers to file and traffic to sit in, but you will be different. As you incorporate your new wisdom and tap into your deeper sense of identity, Home becomes the starting point of continuous renewal.

Returning Home enables us to see the effects of the results achieved. If you choose to continue to evolve, the journey does not fold back in on itself as a circular cycle (see Figure A), but forms a spiral (see Figure B). Spirals occur in nature as evidence of the evolutionary path of growth or change, but they also have an inhibiting factor that keeps growth from spinning out of control. The new journey begins at a higher level than before. This time you’re wiser and more prepared for the road ahead.
