Prudent risk taking starts with a clear vision of what you and other stakeholders value.

For example, Mary, an advertising executive in her early 40s, was offered a once-in-a-lifetime professional challenge, involving a move from California to New York, at a modest salary increase. On learning that Mary was considering the move, her present employer offered her a substantial raise, although she would continue to do the work that she had already mastered. That increase was so large that Mary could comfortably retire years earlier than she had planned. Because she clearly valued professional challenge over financial comfort, Mary accepted the risks inherent in the new job.
