5.. Rules

Rules are our limits or boundaries. Rules are often expressed in statements that contain words such as should, shouldn’t, must, mustn’t, have to, can’t, always, and never. It’s important to be aware of the rules of others, whether they are actually valid or exist only in that person’s head. If the rules a person adheres to are valid, they may be related to company policy, precedent, professional norms, or ethics. If ceratin rules are valid to only one person, they are constraints that the person believes to exist.

It’s not your job to judge these rules or the person who follows them. Your only task is to listen and to be aware that personal rules represent restrictions and boundaries for that person’s behavior.
