2.. Developing a Genuine Interest in Others

Really listening to others requires an attitude of sincere interest and curiosity and an honest desire to see things the way another person sees them. It requires that you temporarily suspend judgment—that for the moment you ignore yourself and your attachment to your own ideas.

For instance, imagine that you’re visiting another planet and the individual with whom you are speaking is an intelligent being you have discovered there. Simply gather information. What does the extraterrestrial look like, sound like? What does she talk about? Remember—don’t evaluate what you perceive, and don’t judge it, even to yourself as good, bad, stupid, smart, or silly. Just observe.
