Chapter 1. The Nature of Entrepreneurship

Part of the American dream is to someday own your own business. For most of us, this dream is within reach. Opportunities for owning and operating small businesses abound. About 675,000 businesses are started each year and most are founded by people probably not unlike yourself. There are currently more than 17 million small, non-farm businesses in the U.S., but by the year 2000, this number is expected to grow to 25 million. That’s 25 million separate entities that began with an entrepreneur’s dream and desire to succeed.

To a budding entrepreneur, starting a small business offers the opportunity for a personally and financially rewarding endeavor—a chance to “battle the world,” to build something from scratch, to control one’s destiny, to be independent and work autonomously, to satisfy a genuine need in the community, to grow as an individual, and to have no one else limit the business’ horizons.
