The Two-Business Couple—an Engineer and an Educational Consultant

Can each person in a couple run his or her own successful business and maintain their relationship? The answer appears to be yes—though, as this case study illustrates, running two businesses from the same home office isn't always a good fit for either entrepreneur.

Vickie and Hans Bockenkamp are husband and wife. Both are also business owners—and for a time, both were home business owners. Today, Hans maintains his engineering and manufacturing consultancy at his home office, whereas Vickie's educational consulting practice is located in a nearby office building. “We still have two desks in the office,” she explains. “But if I take a day to do filing or taxes, it gets really hard, working back to back, particularly because the office is small. I distract him; he distracts me.”
