According to IDC, small businesses (2 to 20 employees), solo entrepreneurs and telecommuters currently make up a universe of 41.3 million in the USA which is expected to grow to 51.6 million by 2002. The annual buying power of this group exceeds $100 billion. In the USA, SoHo (small office/home office) use of the internet leapt to 41.2 per cent in 1998, up from 19.7 per cent in 1996. Small businesses are overwhelmingly accepting the internet as critical to the management and operation of their businesses — enabling them to compete more equitably with larger companies.
