A succession plan can help retain key individuals and allow them to be groomed for the top jobs. But at very senior levels, nominating the crown prince in advance is likely to result in the loss of other talented managers. The alternative is an open race, which sharpens the instincts of the executives in the running and motivates them to higher levels of performance and commitment. This approach also has a downside, however, because it encourages political intrigue, with senior managers jockeying for power to the detriment of the business.
