Sourcing a company's future executive population solely from within may be dangerous. Many companies now recognize the importance of bringing in outsiders to widen the management gene pool. At the senior level, however, an external appointment can drive a coach and horses through the succession plan lower down, especially if the incoming appointee brings in his or her own team. It is bound to send a signal that the company values external appointments above home-grown talent.
