Chapter 38. taking control

Career management is a new phenomenon. As we have seen, in the distant past life unrolled before you. It was largely not yours to control. Then, during the twentieth century, the corporation emerged as the determiner of careers. Now, careers have to be increasingly managed by individuals. It is we, as individuals, who make the choices and call the shots.

The objective, Peter Drucker has observed, is simple enough. Happiness comes from working at what we are good at and in ways that suit our abilities. The trouble is that this rarely happens. The reason, says Drucker, is because we often have little idea of what we are good at. We should ask: What are my strengths? How do I perform? What are my values? Where do I belong? What should my contribution be?
