In the early 1990s, Israel was not exactly renowned for its high-tech capabilities — despite having a highly educated workforce and few natural resources. Then the Israeli government decided to pump money into supporting the country's entrepreneurs. Its venture capital provided a kick-start. Before long money was pouring into high-tech start-ups from inside and outside the country — minimal investment had mushroomed to over $500 million by 1998. The result is Silicon Wadi — wadi, as you will have guessed, means valley. The heart of the Wadi is Tel Aviv where 85 high-tech companies are based at Atidim Park alone.
