Karlsruhe, Germany

Karlsruhe is being aggressively pushed as an alternative to the major German business cities. (And among German cities, big companies are looking east towards Dresden and the Elbe Valley.) In Karlsruhe a new technology park is focusing marketing minds wonderfully. The town's statistics are impressive. One ranking of comparative economic power put Karlsruhe as sixth in Germany behind Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf and Köln, but ahead of Berlin. At the same time, Karlsruhe's strength is that it isn't a big city — its population is only 270,000. The town boasts the Centre for Art and Media Technology, a European school, Baden cuisine and, crucially, the most sunshine days in Germany. More seriously, Bosch, Siemens, Daimler-Benz and Michelin have a presence in the town.
