Admittedly Cambridge has been popular for some time. But now it is blessed with the close by but dreadfully named Silicon Fen (an offspring of the Scottish Silicon Glen where Braveheart meets Bill Gates). Silicon Fen has been celebrated by, among others, the New York Times, which noted with its customary accuracy: "This is no Silicon Valley. The pace here is neither frenetic nor flashy, and people frown on loud manifestations of wealth." The Cambridge area has a strong technological pedigree. It was home to one of the UK's first science parks and Fen converts include Olivetti Research Laboratories and Acorn Computer Group. The biggest deal, of course, was the $80 million Microsoft facility. Big bucks. All Cambridge needs is for a movie with Hugh Grant to be filmed nearby and it would hit the Palo Alto style bonanza.
