Element 38. Taboo > Examples

Examples

Here are some wicked taboos, among many, that should be avoided:

  1. Using the names of the deceased, assuming you could clear the intellectual property rights owned by the heirs.

  2. Unflattering acronyms. In the 1950s the village of Indian Hill created its school system and gave serious thought to honoring its most famous resident who lived just down the street from the school. His name was Robert A. Taft.

  3. Nudity—the 220-volt open line in society today. We love it but when we get too close to it we become electrocuted with near-universal condemnation.

  4. Military-themed channels on cable television. Like nudity, it is alluring stuff but good luck in raising $100 million and attracting distribution commitments from the top six cable system owners.

  5. Health matters, religion, race, personal physical dimensions, weight, or true hair color, although age and height seem to suffer well in public view.
