Pretending Not to Know could be the most bizarre of the elements, compliments of David Carl Gwinn, the fellow who explained it to me after having heard it at a dinner party in Los Angeles. What is the entrepreneur pretending not to know that could be critical? More often than not, the answer is “nothing.” In that case enter a max score of 10 and move forward. However, there are moments when this question smokes out a severe and sometimes insurmountable problem.

Perhaps another way of describing this problem is myopia. Causes can vary from greed, enthusiasm for success, hyperconfidence, some misguided impression or misunderstanding, and dare-devilishness, to some other cause that obstructs cool, sound reasoning. Whatever the cause, the result is that the investor finds an entrepreneur who is pretending not to know that he or she is in trouble with the idea, who is blind to the problem and insists upon not seeing or understanding it.
