Introduction

Wise investors often look first on the personal side of a venture. The theory is that somehow demand, finance, process, and other matters can all be solved but if the people are not right, the odds of success become too remote to warrant further review. This section addresses the personal aspect of the venture as if it were the most important aspect to consider, despite the outcome of the questions relating to demand, capital, and other matters. The concern is justifiable. Few ventures flow smoothly from conception to harvest and the savvy investor knows that the enterprise will reach its objectives only with a smart, dedicated team that can convert threats into opportunities, and opportunities into value. A reminder is helpful: we are toying with questions that flow at the moment an idea is conceived, not when the idea has materialized in the market. This section is therefore something of a self-examination for you at a time when your idea is still cooped up in your imagination. Critically, “personal” is not intended for just one soul. It applies certainly to you and to all the other inside players as well. It relates to all the persons, most particularly to you.

Dr. Market’s Warning:

Get real! These next eight elements require you to be brutally frank about the toughest subject for you to view pragmatically—yourself. Try to be as realistic, candid, and practical as possible here.
