Practical Experience—This Deserves the Maximum Weight of 3

My experience with raising funds is that it is never easy and you often do not receive enough to carry you to the next round. The key is to keep the capital requirements manageable and dwell on achieving operational break even at the earliest practicable time. Orion and PTAT were telecommunications projects, each of which required hundreds of millions of dollars. Each one had its own unique challenges with the up-front fund raising.

If you pay attention up front to reducing the capital required for your enterprise, you might be surprised what you can do for yourself. Companies with yawning capital requirements sometimes solve them with clever and patient brick-by-brick accumulation of capital, risk-reducing measures, and short-term backup plans for generating revenue using other people’s resources.
