Practical Experience—This Deserves the Medium Weight of 2

It is often quite valuable to find a mayor, governor, congressman, or senator to take up your story as a matter of political interest. You do not need to communicate directly with the elected officials but you should expect to be in contact with their staffs. This works for industries where there is likely to be government regulation and for many where regulation is a remote possibility. If you are near these areas, you can always find a politician to support you.

Furthermore, plan on establishing relationships with the congress immediately after your funding arrives. Without giving away secrets, let them know what you are doing. Befriend a senior staffer. Consider what you require from the congress. Replicate the efforts at the state level. This maneuver can be critical to your success because you could be joined soon by “me-too” competitors. Someone may be about to go to the president, the congress, or the state governments with demands to “level the playing field,” which normally means a long uphill climb for you. This is suitable advice for nearly every industrial sector.
