Practical Experience—This Element Deserves a Maximum Weight of 3

The Goethe quote is perhaps the most succinct statement of entrepreneurial truth I have ever seen expressed. It is often the source of the first sign of trouble in a great launch attempt. If the commitment is fractured, uneven, or simply missing in the team, you and the enterprise will have significant problems.

A low score is easy to calculate. Be realistic with yourself. A famous and accomplished surgeon, actually a wonderful soul, once tried to lead many people—including the royal family of the perfect host country—to believe that he would be the key medical mind behind a major new sports medicine facility to be located in the capital city. Money, talented surgeons, customers, land, host country, the Mediterranean Sea, and much more were organized and waiting. What more could you want? But the surgeon was unable to commit and it never came to pass. A great idea that would have significantly elevated the quality of sports health care in Europe was squandered by lack of commitment. In my experience, a lack of commitment by senior management is a compelling sign for you to depart the venture the instant it materializes.
