Element 11. Ambush Exposure > Where to Find This Answer

Where to Find This Answer

Note that there is a reverse twist to this element. If there is a strong ambush exposure, your score will be very low. These sleeping dogs have unallocated resources that could quickly and quietly produce substitutes for your products. Who would suffer the most from your success? Whose business would your creativity harm? Buggy whips and impact typewriters were victims of ambushers—they “owned” the customers that automobiles and computers now serve so well. It remains to be seen whether POTS (plain old telephone service with its switches and twisted pairs) and newspapers will succumb to IP (Internet protocol) and electronic media. Another approach is for you to determine who uses your distribution networks and who uses your vendors for other products. Who in your value chain has resources or products that they could easily fashion into a head-to-head confrontation with you in the market?
