Part: II UNDERSTANDING RISK AND YOUR PRO... > Real Estate and Other Investments

Chapter 10. Real Estate and Other Investments

So far in the book, we have discussed investments with varying degrees of volatility, but with fairly good liquidity. This chapter brings our focus to investments that are typically much less liquid, though they can be very worthwhile investments—particularly when considered over the long-term. The granddaddy in this category is real estate and the various ways that you can invest in real estate. They are followed distantly by gold and other precious metals, and collectibles.

Key Point

Volatility defines the extent to which an investment moves up and down. The greater the volatility, the more likely an investment is to have wide swings in prices.

Liquidity defines the ability to quickly sell an investment with the least chance of losing money.
