Closed-Ended Funds

Closed-end mutual funds are a lot like individual stocks. The mutual fund company sells only a certain number of shares, and following the initial public offering, the only way to buy the fund is to buy the shares on the open market. When you buy a closed-end fund after it has been on the market, you'll buy it either at face value, at a premium, or at a discount.
