Chapter 11. Mutual Funds > Power Checklist

Power Checklist

  • There are over 8,300 mutual funds today in the United States, with a combined asset value of $7.1 trillion.

  • Over 97 percent of mutual funds are open-ended funds that allow you to make additional investments as you choose.

  • U.S. mutual funds are divided into five categories, with over 33 different investment objectives.

  • Be sure that you understand the class of mutual fund shares that you are buying because each type has its own cost structure.

  • You may want to look at investing in an indexed mutual fund. These are very low cost and are designed to mirror their underlying index.

  • SRI funds are mutual funds that invest only in companies that meet certain screens designed to ensure that they are managed by good corporate citizens. Approximately $2 trillion of investment assets are screened today.
