The Netscape Navigator 4 Document Object Model

Internet Explorer versions 5 and 6 have good compliance with the W3C DOM, but they're also backward-compatible. This means that they also support the DHTML DOM and will successfully work with all the DHTML DOM objects, properties, and methods outlined in the previous section.

This is in stark contrast to Netscape 6. This browser also has good compliance with the W3C DOM, but it has absolutely no backward-compatibility. That is, all the DHTML techniques incorporated into Netscape 4 have been completely ignored in Netscape 6, and any scripts designed to work with Netscape 4 will fail miserably when run in version 6.
