The Internet Explorer 4 DHTML Document Object Model

Internet Explorer 4's object model is known as the Dynamic HTML Document Object Model, or the DHTML DOM, for short. It's tantalizingly close to the official W3C DOM standard that I covered in the previous chapter. The most important similarity is that the DHTML DOM sees the document as a hierarchy of elements (tags, which are viewed as objects) and text, and it gives you programmatic access to all those objects. Also, the DHTML DOM describes objects that contain subobjects as parents and the contained subobjects as children.

However, the DHTML DOM isn't tree-like, as is the W3C DOM, but is rather flat. For example, consider the following simple document:
