The Pre-DOM Dark Ages

The Document Object Model Level 1 that you learned about in Chapter 32, "Version 5 DHTML: The W3C's Document Object Model," was a glimpse of scripting life as it should be. That is, it's based on a published, recognized standard that's supported by the latest browsers from Microsoft and Netscape.

In this chapter, we say a (temporary) farewell to that more perfect world and return to the Old Country, or what I like to call the Document Object Model Level 0.5. This is the DOM (or I should say DOMs) used in the 4.x versions of Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. You'll see the Navigator model isn't even within shouting distance of the DOM standard, and that Explorer's model isn't far off. However, the important points to note are that both models must be considered proprietary and that these models are substantially different.
