What Is an Expression?

The JavaScript variables that you learned about in Chapter 3, "Understanding Variables," can't do much of anything by themselves. They don't become useful members of your script community until you assign values to them, use them to assign values to other variables and to JavaScript objects, and so on.

The heart of all this is the expression, which is a collection of symbols, words, and numbers that performs a calculation and produces a result. This chapter takes you through some expression basics and shows you a number of techniques for building powerful expressions using numbers, strings, and Boolean values.
